GPA Calculator — Free 4.0 Grade Point Average Tool
Calculate GPA instantly on a 4.0 scale. Enter courses, credits, and grades to get your GPA, quality points, and academic standing.
Ready to calculate
Enter your courses, credit hours, and grades to calculate your GPA.
Use this GPA calculator to turn courses, credit hours, and letter grades into a clear grade point average. It uses the standard 4.0 scale and weights every course by credit hours, so a 4-credit class affects your result more than a 1-credit seminar. The result shows your GPA, total credits, total quality points, and a course-by-course breakdown you can use for planning.
How to Use This GPA Calculator
- Enter each course name — optional, but useful when comparing classes.
- Add credit hours — enter how many credits the course is worth.
- Select the letter grade — choose A+ through F, including plus and minus grades.
- Add more courses — use one row per class in the term or course group you want to calculate.
- Review the result — your GPA updates automatically with total credits and quality points.
GPA Formula
The GPA formula is:
GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours
Quality points are calculated one course at a time:
Quality Points = Grade Points x Credit Hours
This is why credit hours matter. A B in a 4-credit course has more impact than an A in a 1-credit course because the 4-credit course carries more weight in the denominator.
GPA Calculation Example
Example course load:
- English: A, 3 credits = 12.0 quality points
- Biology: B+, 4 credits = 13.2 quality points
- Math: A-, 3 credits = 11.1 quality points
- History: B, 3 credits = 9.0 quality points
Total quality points = 45.3
Total credit hours = 13
GPA = 45.3 / 13 = 3.48
The calculator does this math automatically as soon as you enter your courses. You can change grades, credits, or course count to model different outcomes before final grades are posted.
4.0 GPA Scale
Most US schools use a version of the 4.0 GPA scale. This calculator uses the common unweighted version:
| Letter Grade | Grade Points |
|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 |
| A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| D- | 0.7 |
| F | 0.0 |
Some schools use weighted scales for AP, IB, honors, or advanced courses. Those policies vary, so a transcript GPA may differ from the unweighted number shown here. For admissions, scholarships, or official reporting, always compare this result with your school’s published grading policy.
Which GPA Tool Should You Use?
| Need | Best Tool |
|---|---|
| Quick course-by-course GPA on a 4.0 scale | This GPA Calculator |
| College course planning with detailed course rows | College GPA Calculator |
| One academic term only | Semester GPA Calculator |
| Multiple semesters or international scales | CGPA Calculator |
| Current course grade needed before finals | Final Grade Calculator |
The generic GPA calculator is the best starting point when you want a fast 4.0-scale average from a list of classes. If you are tracking a transcript across several terms, the CGPA calculator is the better fit because it weights each semester by credits.
GPA Benchmarks
GPA expectations vary by school and program, but these ranges are common:
| GPA Range | Common Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 3.7 - 4.0 | Very strong academic performance |
| 3.5 - 3.69 | Often competitive for honors or Dean’s List |
| 3.0 - 3.49 | Good standing for many programs |
| 2.0 - 2.99 | Passing, but may limit scholarships or selective programs |
| Below 2.0 | Academic probation risk at many schools |
Do not treat these as universal cutoffs. A 3.4 GPA can be strong in a demanding program, while a scholarship or major may require a specific minimum. Use the calculator to understand the math, then check the policy that applies to your school.
How to Improve Your GPA
- Focus on high-credit courses first — they move the GPA more than low-credit electives.
- Protect plus/minus grades — moving from B to B+ or B+ to A- can matter across several courses.
- Use target grades before finals — combine this tool with the Weighted Grade Calculator to see what is still possible.
- Retake strategically — if your school allows grade replacement, retaking a low grade in a high-credit course can have a large effect.
- Track cumulative impact — use the CGPA Calculator to see how one term changes your full academic average.
GPA vs. Percentage
GPA and percentage grades are related but not identical. A course percentage is usually converted to a letter grade first, and the letter grade then maps to grade points. That means a 90%, 95%, and 100% may all count as A or A+ depending on the school’s policy.
If your school reports percentage grades, convert each final course percentage to the official letter grade before entering it here. That gives a closer GPA estimate than averaging percentages directly.
Planning With GPA Targets
You can use the calculator before grades are final. Enter the credit hours for your courses and test different grade outcomes. This helps answer questions like:
- What GPA do I get if I earn A, B+, B, and A- this term?
- How much does a 4-credit science course affect my average?
- Can I stay above a 3.5 if one course drops to a B?
- Which class should get the most study time before finals?
For a single-course view, use the Final Grade Calculator. For a broader transcript view, use the Semester GPA Calculator or CGPA Calculator.
